Karin Shaw Obituary

Karin Shaw (December 4, 1932 -June 19, 2006) Karin Shaw, died at the Hershey Medical Center, June 19, 2006. Karin was born on Dec. 4, 1932, in Detroit, Mich., to Sidney and Kathryn Hannon Oldberg. She attended schools in Birmingham, Mich., and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1955. She and Peter Shaw were married on June 22, 1957, eventually settling in State College in 1962. Karin is survived by her husband, Peter; by daughters, Jessica White (Danny), of Cincinnati, Ohio, Hope Scannell (Jamie), of St. Paul, Minn. and Sarah Murray (Mike), of Carlsbad, Calif.; a son, Chris Shaw (Beth), of Unionville; a sister, Ruth Peters (Alan), of Quogue, N.Y.; a brother, Terry Oldberg (Vicki), of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Martha Shaw, of Ashley Falls, Mass. In addition, she is survived by six granddaughters, Ashley, Brittany, Alison, Kathryn, Megan and Ella; and two grandsons, Jacob and Liam. A strong religious faith was central to Karin’s life and nourished her love of family and friends, enhanced her appreciation of nature, art, architecture and music, and compelled her to act on behalf of social justice as distinct from charity, although she enthusiastically embraced both-outside as well as within the structure of her church. Karin was a member and secretary of the board of directors of the State College Peace Center and took part in many of the activities of that organization. Karin’s favorite relaxation activity was hiking Pennsylvania’s trails with her friends. She also enjoyed swimming, gardening and was a constant reader of both fiction and nonfiction. Karin went about all endeavors with clear practicality and remarkable self-discipline, attributes she encouraged in those she loved-with limited success in the case of her husband. She will be greatly missed by those she loved and who loved her, and in time mourning will become instructive remembrance.
