Theadore Wald was born in Rohod, Hungary, in 1929. Ted’s parents were Ignatz and Blanka. Ted was also the youngest of 5 children, and the only one of them born in Rohod. In 1944, the Nazis came to Hungary and sent 440,000 Jews to concentration camps, Ted and his family among them. They were sent to Auschwitz, but soon Ted and Ignatz were relocated to Buchenwald. Herman was also relocated later, alone. Blanka was the first to perish in June, shortly after their arrival. Ignatz held on longer. But he eventually died in December 1944, 5 months before liberation. After liberation, Ted went to a DP camp, then back to Hungary, then he went to New York. He worked in a factory during the day, and went to school at night. After that he moved to Canada. Then he met Hadassa Halay. They married in 1970. Ted set up a successful leather coat business in Montreal. In 1973, they had Ron. In 1977, they had Daniel. In 2000, Ted retired. That same year, Ron married Rachel Dayan. In 2004, Daniel married Audrey Hadida. In 2006, Ron and Rachel had a son, Benjamin Joseph. In 2007, Daniel and Audrey had a son too: Avi Noah. The year later, Ron and Rachel had their second child, Zachary Ori. In 2010, Daniel and Audrey had their second child, who they named David. In 2012, Ron and Rachel had twins: Joshua Marc and Tamar Esther. In 2021, Ted fell sick with Covid-19, and died 2 weeks later on February 26. He was buried later that day in Montreal.
Haddasa Halay was born in 1937 in Israel, then still Palestine. Her parents were Benjamin and Esther, who had come from Poland. In 1944, Esther and Benjamin gave birth to their second child, Talya. In the 1950s, the family moved to Argentina. In the 1960s, they left Argentina to return to Israel, though because she didn’t like it in Argentina, Haddasa had left a few years earlier to join the IDF. After that, Hadassa got a job as a teacher at Ramat Gan. In 1967, she went to New York State to teach for a few years. On New Year’s Eve 1970, she met Theadore Wald. They married that same year. In 1990, tragedy struck. That year, her beloved father Benjamin died. In 2003, Haddasa fell sick with Alzheimer’s disease. In 2007, her mother Esther died. In 2021, she, along with her husband, 3 housekeepers, and Daniel fell sick with COVID-19. Haddassa died a week after getting sick on February 18. She was buried the next day. 8 days after Haddassa’s death, Ted died. He was buried next to Hadassa in the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery in Montreal. The Wald family tree
