Lajos or “Louis”, proposed marriage to the woman who became his first wife and the mother of their child, Dezso or “David”. Louis had wanted to break the engagement, but his parents would not permit it. They told him that he could not shame a decent girl by such action. Later they divorced and he remarried. Lajos was entrepreneurial and was always either broke or doing very well. He loved women, diamonds and horses, probably in that order, but was a loveable rascal. He used to take his nephew Tom for rides in his coach pulled by beautiful Arabian horses. He gave Tommy a beautiful sled that he and his siblings enjoyed in the winters. As a young man, he would disappear for long periods of time, deploring different parts of the world. Unfortunately, his younger brother Jeno had to bail him out financially several times during the not so good times.
During World War I, Lajos served as a first lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army’s Supply Division in Russia. He. successfully led a counter attack to save his supply train and received a silver medal for his heroics. However, while in Russia, he caught malaria. It was a reoccurring disease and was treated by raising the body’s temperature. During one of these reoccurrence he passed away at the Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Miskolc and was buried in the Jewish cemetery located on Avas Mountain
